The continent of Antarctica is located mostly south of the Antarctic Circle.

Roughly circular Antarctica is well over 5 million square miles (13 and a half million square km) of continent, virtually untouched by human hand and shared out among quite a few other countries, often for purposes of science, communications and defense. The White Continent spreads over the South Pole in a stupendous sheaf of ice, at its thickest almost three miles deep! It is divided by the Transantarctic Mountain Range into Greater and Lesser Antarctica. Its shifting population consists of a small number of research scientists working on issues as diverse as the ozone layer problem and the life cycle of the emperor penguin. The awe-inspiring and enchanting beauties of this mysterious country look like science fiction discovered by a landscape photographer. The ice is a wonder in itself—tabular icebergs standing as high out of the water as 10-60 metres (30-200 feet) break away as the inland ice moves towards the surrounding waters, shoving long tongues of ice into waters often blizzard-blown by hurricane-force winds.
