Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean Sea, south of Cuba. Jamaica (146 miles long and up to 51 miles wide) is the third largest island in the Caribbean.

Bob Marley, Harry Belafonte (he's American but he did live here)-every generation loves Jamaica. And there's more than music to meet the eye-from white sand beaches to the Blue Mountains, and every waterfall, coffee tree and colonial building in between. Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean. Jamaicans are warm and fun-loving, with a clear sense of life's true pleasures. Every kind of Caribbean experience is available to you here.

The name of the country derives from the name Xamayca, meaning land of wood and water, given to it by the original Arawak people from South America, who first settled there around the year 1000.

  Jamaica Overview

The climate is tropical and temperate in the mountains, and the 6-month rainy season is worst when it begins and ends, May and October. Jamaica suffers serious hurricanes (1988 Hurricane Gilbert) and earthquakes: in 1692, Port Royal sank into the sea; the 1907 quake destroyed much of Kingston; and there was another serious earthquake in 1993.
