A.K.A. the Confederation of Helvetia. It is not only the fine Swiss chocolate and cheese that attracts many tourists each year, it is also the wonderland of quaint villages nestled in the Alps, medieval towns and forested valleys. Switzerland offers winter sport activities, second to none, with views of snow capped mountains, glaciers, alpine lakes and mesmerising sunsets. Try your hand at yodelling or blowing the alp horn with the more traditional locals or dance the night away at one of the many vibrant night clubs. From country to city there is something for each age and interest - fascinating architecture, wine tours, castle tours or bike tours. Climb aboard the Swiss Chocolate Train which stops off at towns and cities where you can enjoy local wine, cuisine and countryside. A destination for diplomats, financial fundis, humanitarians and tourists alike. A land where the German, French, Italian and Romansch speaking inhabitants have shared their cultures and shone the light on peace and democracy for all to see and learn.

Switzerland is in Central Europe, east of France, north of Italy. The Swiss landscape is characterised by the Alps, a high mountain range running across the central-south of the country. Amongst the high peaks of the Swiss Alps, the highest of which is the Dufour Peak at 4,634 m, are found countless valleys, some with glaciers. From these the headwaters of several major European rivers such as the Rhine, the Rhône, the Inn, the Aare or the Ticino, flow down into lakes such as Lake Geneva, Lake Zürich, Lake Neuchâtel, and Lake Constance and farther down.

  Switzerland Overview

The climate in this mountainous area is moderate. You will not be overcome by excessive heat in summer or cold in winter. Average temperatures in July/August range between 18-24 degrees C and in January/ February 2 degrees C. The alpine areas are cooler; the peaks are snow capped all year round. Great for skiing (ski resorts are however closed for the month of May). Spring, summer and autumn are pleasant and generally sunny, although it may be cold at high altitudes. The weather varies regionally with a drier climate north of the Alps and the west region receiving a relatively high amount of precipitation.
